A Better Way to Apply Mortar
Accurate mortar application is an important part of masonry, natural stonework and restoration. Especially when working with irregular stone, textured surfaces or existing masonry, placing mortar exactly where it is needed can make the difference between clean joint work and unnecessary cleaning afterwards.
For this type of application, professionals often use what the construction industry calls a grout bag, mortar bag or pointing bag. The principle will be familiar to anyone who has worked with a piping bag: mortar is placed inside the bag and pressure from the hands creates a controlled flow through the opening.
It is a simple technique, but one that can be particularly useful when mortar needs to be placed accurately into joints rather than spread across the surrounding stonework.
Applying Mortar in Stonework, Pointing and Restoration
A mortar bag can be useful when filling joints in natural stone masonry, brickwork, brick slips, stone veneer and restoration projects. Instead of spreading mortar across the surface, the material can be deposited more directly into the joint before it is compacted and finished with the appropriate pointing tool.
This is particularly relevant when working with rough, irregular or porous surfaces. Mortar that is unnecessarily spread over these surfaces can be more difficult to remove than on smooth masonry.
Restoration work presents another challenge. Existing joints may vary considerably in depth and width, while surrounding masonry often needs to be disturbed as little as possible. Controlled placement helps the mason put material where it is required before carrying out the final joint finishing.
Although these tools are frequently called grout bags, pointing applications commonly involve mortar rather than structural masonry grout. Choosing the correct mortar for the substrate and restoration system therefore remains essential.
Mortar Consistency, Aggregate Size and Flow
Successful application depends on more than the strength of the bag.
The consistency of the mortar, its aggregate grading and the size of the bag opening all influence how easily material can be dispensed. A mixture that is too stiff or contains particles that are too large for the opening can restrict the flow and substantially increase the pressure required from the operator.
The solution should not simply be to add more water. Changing the prescribed water-to-mortar ratio can affect workability and, depending on the mortar system, its final properties. The material should always be prepared according to the mortar manufacturer’s instructions.
The outlet also needs to correspond with the joint width and the material being applied. Too small an opening increases resistance, while an unnecessarily large opening reduces placement accuracy.
